phylum | Mollusca | Banana slug is a common name for three species of North American terrestrial slugs in the genus Ariolimax. While often bright yellow, they may also be greenish, brown, tan, or white. The Pacific banana slug, Ariolimax columbianus, may have black spots so extensive that the animal looks entirely black. Length may reach 25 cm. (9.8 in). The single lung opens on the right side via a pneumostome. Mucus is secreted to combat dehydration. Distribution is along the Pacific coastal rainforest belt.
