phylum | Chordata | Australonycteris is an extinct genus of bat from the Eocene epoch of Australia. It is the oldest known bat from the Southern Hemisphere, and only a few northern bats, such as Icaronycteris, are older. Its anatomy indicates that it could probably echolocate, and likely fed on insects and possibly fish.
