Amphipoda is an order of malacostracan crustaceans with no carapace and generally with laterally compressed bodies. Size ranges from 1 to 340 mm (0.039 to 13 in). Most are detritivores or scavangers. Most are marine animals. Of the 9,900 species, some 1,900 live in fresh water, and the order includes terrestrial animals and sandhoppers.

phylum | Arthropoda | Phronima sedentaria is a species of amphipod crustacean found in the non polar oceans of the world, including the Mediterranean Sea, at a depth of up to 1 km (0.6mi). Females are up to 42 mm (1.7 in) long, while males are only 15 mm (0.6 in) long. Females brood their eggs in the barrel-like shells of salps and pyrosomas after eating the contents. These amphipods prey on krill and zooplankton.
