| phylum | Arthropoda | Vanessa virginiensis, known as the American Lady, is a butterfly from the Nymphalidae family, often pictured in art and educational materials. Native to North America, it is also found in parts of Central America and the Caribbean, inhabiting open fields, meadows, and gardens where its larval host plants grow. Its caterpillar is dark with yellow stripes and covered in spines. The butterfly is easily identified by two large eye spots on the underside of its hindwings and distinctive orange and black patterns on the upper wings.
