phylum | Chordata | The Alabama map turtle, Graptemys pulchra, is a species of emydid turtle endemic to the Mobile Bay drainage basin of the southern United States. A diagnostic characteristic is a black stripe down the center of the carapace with knobs protruding from it. Length of females can reach 29.2 cm (11.5 in), with males less than half that size. The heads of females are large for crushing molluscs. Males have large tails with the vent past the edge of the carapace.
