This species is native to the Western Pacific Ocean, with a distribution centered around the coasts of Japan and China. The shell is globose (round) and features a low spire. Its exterior is rough and usually covered with strong spiral ridges or granular sculpture. The color pattern is highly variable but often consists of black and white zigzag markings or bands. A characteristic feature of the genus is the thick, smooth operculum, or trapdoor, which is used to seal the large aperture.
