Gulls, terns, and skimmers are seabirds of the family Laridae. They are distant relatives of the auks and waders.

Gulls and terns are typically medium to large white birds, often with black markings on their wings. Gulls tend to have either all-black or all-white heads, and, despite their common name of “seagulls”, can be found in a variety of habitats. Terns generally have black caps and dagger-like bills, and are specialized piscivores.
