Alcidae, commonly known as auks or alcids, is a family of seabirds in the order Charadriiformes. Auks include the puffins, murres, guillemots, murrelets, and auklets. Auks live only in the Northern Hemisphere, and most species have black and white breeding plumage. The largest and the only flightless species, the great auk, is now extinct.
